Half-Life: Source

after deciding to play every half life game (including Black mesa, Blue Shit and opfor) on hard, i said "Fuck it. Let's play HL:S on hard. how bad could it be?" 12 hours of quick saving and quick loading and dying to even the weakest of enemies later i can say that i would rather play DDLC then play through HL:S on hard ever again.

If you want to experience half life on crack, play this

Half-Life is one of my favorite games, I'm replaying it every 5-10 years, and over that time finished the original at least three times, and Black Mesa Source twice. But this time I decided to play HL: Source just to see how it's different. Alas, it's significantly worse than the original, and is definitely the worst way to play Half-Life.

The visuals are a tad better (especially water), but controls are way worse, and the game is full of bugs. I got stuck multiple times, fallen off a cliff or a ladder to my death, got instantly deleted by enemies (playing on normal), and experienced tons of other issues not present in the original game. I installed the original Half-Life right after finishing this one. And it's indeed still great, not like my memory of the game is better than the game itself.

So the only reason to play HL: Source is if you, like me, played Half-Life multiple times and want to see what's different here. But better don't: you will only be disappointed.

Many bugs, sadly I bought this version instead of the original for my first run through. DON'T BE LIKE ME buy the original game. The giant freaking cool green crab monster doesn't even do damage... MASSIVE L literally.

This was the version I played and I thought it wasn't that bad. There were definitely some major issues like the seizure inducing water and outside warping like a Windows XP computer out of RAM.

Although the save system/save menu is far easier to use, I've experienced problems in gameplay. Typically with scripted sequences. Here are a few examples: A security guard not being able to open an airlock in Anomalous Materials. The Apache helicopter in surface tension being unable to be destroyed due to problems with the hitbox. The pipe that a HECU grunt throws a satchel charge into being unable to open. (I had to noclip out of that pipe in order to progress.) In all, this wasn't a great remaster. Half-Life is a great game, but I wouldn't buy this.

UPDATE: I killed Nihilanth and it was far too easy. I'm playing on hard, so I was certainly prepared for the worst. I don't know if this is just because of whatever I did to kill it, or if it's the game's fault. I just find it somewhat odd.

The only thing HL: Source has really been good for is getting Half-Life assets in GMOD.

Imagine if Half-Life was ported to the Source Engine. Something good would surely come out of it.

Yes, maybe, but not with this game. Half-Life itself is a great game and the Source Engine is certainly a great engine, after all Half-Life 2 runs on it. But when you transfer a game from one engine to another, you have to adapt things and that doesn't seem to have been the case with Half-Life: Source.

The game benefits visually from the new engine, even if no changes have been made to 3D models or textures. For example, the Havok physics engine, which is always present in Source, is also at work.T here is ragdoll physics, where enemies collapse after death and surrender to gravity. They are also thrown around by explosions. The light and shadow effects also look nicer in this port. The best way to see this is to use the flashlight. Some textures also have bump mapping, metallic surfaces have a shiny layer on them and some particle effects look nicer.

But why isn't it a successful port after all? The gameplay hasn't really been adapted and it has a lot of bugs. When I say gameplay in an FPS, I mainly mean the AI of the enemies, which doesn't react well at all. On the one hand, it seems very sluggish to me and on the other, it's not very good at hitting me. This makes the game less challenging than in the original.

I also had also a large amount of bugs in scripts or graphical bugs. For example in chapter 10, where you move on the conveyor belts, at some points it was hard so see anything. And another example was at some time it In the first encounter with the Tentacles. One of the guards was scripted to run to his certain death, but for some reason the Tentacles couldn't kill him, so he kept shooting lead at them while I could easily sneak past them. Just to name a few examples.

But that's a shame. It would have been nice to get a good little remastered Half-Life in the Source Engine back then. But luckily we live more than 20 years later and the good thing that this port brought was that fans had the idea to make a real remake in the Source Engine: Namely Black Mesa. Which I would recommend everyone to play. If you still want the original experience, you should stick with the old Half-Life.

Unfortunately, this port is just proof and some sort of a tech demo that it was possible to port games from the Goldsrc engine to Source easily.

Only nice thing about this, slaughtering the people in Anomalous Materials section with Impulse 101 command. (Goofy ass physics.)

Don't fix it if it's not broken.

The worst "remake" in Valve's history, maybe even in gamedev's history, EVER! There were so many lags, like if it wasn't even tested once! Easy difficulty level is three times harder than hard in the original game! And also constant crashes, especially during the battle with Nihilanth. When finishing orginal Half Life took me loading tye save for like 2-3 times, I SPENT 30 FUCKING MINUTES RESPAWNING ON THIS VERSION!

PLEASE IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME RUN

only 3 things i can say that are good about this game, 1. better flashlight. 2. chapter selection. 3. able to mount HL:S to GMod to get HL1 stuff. other than that this game bad. waste of $10, should just come with HL1.

I would like to thank Valve for making these games for us. Games like Portal (1-2), Team Fortress (OG-2), and the game (which the third might never come out) Half-life (1-2-Alyx-etc).

You can't blow up a military helicopter in one of the

This seems to be the only (inexpensive) way to play Half Life now that the Black Mesa folks have decided to heavily monetize their (derivative) offering. Even then, the difficulty level is just ridiculous, and I found it too hard after only a few hours of playing. (I cut my teeth on FPS games in the 90s, so shut up about "gitting gud". I cheated to the last levels, and these are literally unplayably hard.)

If difficulty is a concern for you, don't even bother. There are a dang glut of decent, even okay FPS games to choose from, you needn't play this one specifically just because it's "famous". ;)

Half-Life: Source could've been amazingly awesome, but ended up being a tech sample to showcase how easily it was to port a GoldSrc game over to Source. In addition to that it also has a ton of bugs all over the place that doesn't exist or was patched in the original game ages ago.

When I initially gave it a try at release, I didn't last for much longer than the initial train ride. Once the train ride had concluded and I realized that the game truly did not have anything really new to bring to the table, I ended up dropping it and I wouldn't play it in its entirety until 21 years later.

The best that Half-Life: Source brought us wasn't anything connected to it itself, but was what it spawned, such as the amazing reimagining of Half-Life that is Black Mesa -- a game that initially began as two separate mods on a quest to do Half-Life: Source proper.

If you want to play and experience the original Half-Life properly, play Half-Life itself. After its 25th years anniversary update in 2023, it has been updated to work really well on modern hardware and still holds up quite well. If you want to experience a modern and much improved take on Half-Life (especially its Xen chapters), go and play Black Mesa instead.

Only play Half-Life: Source if you are bored and really want to try it out and see what all the fuzz was about.

Graphics aside, this game is just super medicore as hell. Textures not updated, Weapon textures kinda looking ugly, NPCs going thru walls and all that. You're better off playing the original instead.

I feel like this game doesn't get the recognition and support it deserves.

Things I like about it:
#1 because this is Source, we had things like Freeman's Mind, or HL:VRAI
we wouldn't have that without this game

#2 this game has graphics that I enjoy

#3 it has an actual physics engine, allowing for more interactivity

#4 technically, this is a hl2 mod, which gives it a smaller file size

#5 cool ragdoll physics and better blood & water effects

#6 you can play it in gmod and get half-life addons for it

Things I dislike about this game:

#1 even though theres a physics engine, you can't pick up anything (props to Black Mesa)

#2 This game barely even uses the physics engine Source came with

#3 It's not free

#4 The moment in Residue Processing where the skybox glitches into the map

Even though theres a lot more things about this game, it still deserves some praise.

you only really will use this for GMOD just for the assets, mainly because no one has fucking uploaded better ragdolls on the workshop, as you already know you shouldn't play it blah blah blah, go play hl1 or black mesa

This may be controversial but I'd still recommend this after playing all the other games and expansions like a million times over if you're bored. I didn't encounter any major bugs and managed to finish it.

very bad experience! i cant get any controllers to work and even when i try to use community layouts they are blank and dont even load or register! if anyone knows why my controller layouts wont work for this game that would be amazing!

In a post 25th Anniversary update and Black Mesa world this version of the game just feels kinda useless? its buggy, uses fanmade HD assets that you can just find on gamebanana, and for some reason it cost the same as standard HL1 and Black Mesa on sale?

Good remake, actually has ammo CVARs, better commands, is in source, but fixes nearly (if not) nothing from the original. This adds ZERO captions, which is a bummer, and even still has some from hl2 left inside the files. Also good for GMod. Has EVERY half life 2 map in the files (but not episodes)

not as good as the goldsrc version, but still alright

I got this through the Valve complete pack a long time ago. Gotta say, its pretty ass. I can only really see it being used if you want to experiment with bringing your Goldsrc mods to Source but even then, thats a stretch. I mean it is funny sometimes to see how messed up this game is, but most of the time its just frustrating. Yes I am aware of mods that attempt to fix the game but even then, I really don't think Half-Life: Source is genuinely worth your money or your time. However I will go to say, it does have GMod support which could be really fun! HLVRAI was made using the GMod support version which is pretty damn funny. But unless you really have plans to use this in GMod, I really don't recommend it.

There's a lot to unpack here. Get the GoldSrc version and play that instead.

This game used to be a great source remaster but has been breaking down due to neglect by valve, if you want a good half life remaster in source I recommend playing black mesa, it is more expensive than this but has much more care and just feels like more than a ctrl+c ctrl+v.
